The Sixth Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards Exhibition Raised the Curtain in NAMOC

On January 11, 2018, jointly hosted by China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Chinese Calligraphers Association and National Art Museum of China (NAMOC), “The Sixth Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards Exhibition” raised the curtain in NAMOC.
“Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards” is the highest-level award of Chinese calligraphy art industry. With approval of Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, it is under the auspices of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Chinese Calligraphers Association. This is one of the 18 national-class art awards. Since its inception in 2001, “Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards” has been successfully granted for five consecutive sessions. Chinese Calligraphers Association started to make preparations for “Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards” in 2017. Since the solicitation, a total of 3,803 submissions were received from 1,148 applicants (3,404 calligraphy and seal cutting works and 399 theoretical research articles). After meticulous review by industry experts, a total of 70 award winners and shortlists were selected. Among them, there were 14 award winners (seven winners of silver award, seven winners of bronze award, and vacant winner of gold award) and 56 shortlists. This exhibition brought together 171 works by 57 award winners and shortlists in Calligraphy and Seal Cutting Group, theoretical research articles by 13 award winners and shortlists in Theoretical Research Group, as well as 44 works by juries, supervisors and reviewers. The vacancy of gold award was decided by jury committee and review committee after careful deliberation and unanimous vote. Such result is not only a realistic judgment based on the current situations of the contemporary calligraphy creation, but also implies that there is still great room for improvement and development of contemporary calligraphy creation.
The organization and review of “Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards” 2017 adheres to the correct art orientation, carries forward Chinese spirit, unites the Chinese forces, inherits the Chinese culture, and contributes to the aesthetics of new era. For the purpose of rooting in tradition, encouraging innovation, laying equal emphasis on art and culture and achieving all-inclusive diversity, this event implements rigorous and scientific review system. The review results objectively and truly mirrors the overall attainment of contemporary calligraphy creation and theoretical study, and takes a panoramic view for prosperity and development of Chinese calligraphy industry. This is both concentrated expression of the contemporary calligraphy art development, but also further enhances artistic and authoritative quality of “Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards”.
As the first major event in the calligraphy circle after the Nineteenth National Congress of the CPC, “Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Awards” 2017 will mark a good start for calligraphy art to forge ahead in new era. Under the guidance of the keynote of the Nineteenth National Congress of the CPC, domestic calligraphers and calligraphy practitioners will continue to create more outstanding works and theoretical articles. On the basis of the great success of the Nineteenth National Congress of the CPC and joint efforts from all people, the Chinese calligraphy undertaking will not only constantly flourish and make progress, but also will be bound to write a gorgeous chapter in the literature and art development history in the new era.
The exhibition is open for visitors in Exhibition Halls 1, 2, 6, 8 and 9, and will last until January 21, 2018 (No Entry on Mondays).
