The 5th China Changchun World Sculpture Conference, hosted by the People’s Government of Changchun Municipality; Department of Art, Ministry of Culture and the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) saw a grand opening in Changchun Museum, Changchun World Sculpture Park, Changchun in the morning of September 7, 2017. At the entrance of the Changchun Museum, a sculpture themed Enquiry on Daoism, (inspired by the story of Confucius, a philosopher of the Spring and Autumn period in Chinese history, asking Lao Zi, another philosopher of the same Period in Chinese history, founder of Daoism, about what Daoism was about) was erected. The sculpture attracted a lot of visitors to take pictures with it. Signifying two peaks of traditional Chinese culture with their gentle smiles to greet the domestic and international delegates, the sculpture manifests the humanistic spirit of peace and friendship, mutual learning among civilizations. The creator of this piece is Mr. Wu Weishan, the academic master of this Sculpture Conference, NAMOC Director, Vice Chairman of China Artists Association.

Mr. Wu used to be the academic master of the 3rd and 4th China Changchun World Sculpture Conference. This was his 3rd consecutive time presiding over this Conference. He said that people of Changchun love sculpture and they love more of sculptors; every Conference has got its new concept, new objectives and new works for these past five consecutive Sculpture Conferences.

According to information, close to a thousand sculpture artists from more than 200 countries and regions left their exquisite sculpture works permanently for Changchun. In recent years, Changchun has also built 10 sculpture themed parks and 4 sculpture museums for collection of domestically and internationally famed sculptors’ works. Mr. Wu said that, “These works are externalization of emotions, cohesion of spirits. Dialogue between different nationalities, different styles and different cultures enables sculptors around the world heart-to-heart communication, allowing us to be more like a family.”

From September 7 to September 9, over 300 celebrated domestic and international sculptors, artists, theorists from more than 40 countries/regions, representatives from Changchun World Sculpture Park and planning bureau of various cities as well as representatives from sculpture offices attended the Conference where they exchanged the sculpture culture. This Conference was themed on “World Sculpture in Changchun,” and highlighted artistry, technicality and internationalism. During the Conference, the 5th International Urban Sculpture Summit Forum, 6 Sub-Forums and 13 thematic exhibitions were also held. The theme of these concurrent events was “Belt and Road Leading Sculpture Culture Exchange.”
