“Light and Shadow Life—Retrospective Exhibition of Gao Fan and Niu Weiyu’s Photographic Works” Made Debut in National Art Museum of China

On the afternoon of June 9, 2017, organized by National Art Museum of China, A Series of Artworks Donated to National Art Museum of China: “Light and Shadow Life—Retrospective Exhibition of Gao Fan and Niu Weiyu’s Photographic Works” raised the curtain in National Art Museum of China.
Mr. Wu Weishan, Mr. Li Qianguang and Mr. Gao Shiming respectively delivered speech for the exhibition. Ms. Niu Weiyu gave an address of thanks. Subsequently, on behalf of National Art Museum of China, Mr. Wu Weishan, Director of National Art Museum of China, issued a donation certificate to Ms. Niu Weiyu, and expressed thanks for family members’ donation of 240 photographic works created by Mr. Gao Fan and Ms. Niu Weiyu, which enrich the national photography art treasures. He also wished that Ms. Niu Weiyu aged over 90 would maintain good health.
Mr. Wu Weishan summarizes both two revolutionary veterans’ life story with “Moment of Eternality”. In revolutionary movement for national salvation, Mr. Gao Fan and Ms. Niu Weiyu risked their lives, and recorded the heroic struggle of the Chinese people under the leadership of the CPC with camera. They took photos on brilliant scenes with camera lens, flash lamp, their hearts, their hands, their emotions and deep love for motherland, the earth, the common people and wholehearted devotion to the Chinese revolution. All their works and photographic angles not only sparkle their wisdom, but also are full of their lifelong emotions.
This exhibition consists of five parts, i.e., “He Came from Taihang Mountain—Gao Fan’s Wartime Photography”, “Lifetime Dream for Landscape—Gao Fan’s Photography in the New China”, “Female Elegance—Niu Weiyu’s Photography with Woman Themes”, “Features of the Times—Niu Weiyu’s Photography with Portrait Themes” and “Border Rivers and Mountains—Niu Weiyu’s Photography with Border Themes”.
Ms. Niu Weiyu and Mr. Gao Fan’s first solo exhibitions were unveiled in National Art Museum of China on March 8, 1988 and August 1, 1999, respectively. The two exhibitions were also the only exhibitions with retrospect to photography career in National Art Museum of China. It is of special significance to hold “Retrospective Exhibition of Gao Fan and Niu Weiyu’s Photographic Works” in National Art Museum of China again several decades later.
Mr. Gao Fan (1922-2004) is a native of Xiaoshan, Zhejiang Province. In 1938, he joined in revolution, and took such posts as Political Affairs Officer of Division 129 of the Eighth Route Army and Publicity Section Chief of Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Region Political Department. He dedicated to battlefield photography in Shangdang Battle, Dingtao Battle, Linfen Battle, Jinzhong Battle and other battles. During the wars, he was the main person-in-charge of Battlefield Pictorial, People's Pictorial and North China Pictorial. After the founding of the PRC, he successively served as Editor-in-chief of Southwest Pictorial of the PLA Southwest Military Region; Deputy Editor-in-chief, Editor-in-chief and President of PLA Pictorial; Editor-in-chief of Chinese Photography. He used to be one of initiators for China Photographic Society. He successively served as Director, Vice Chairman, Chairman and Honorary Chairman of China Photographers Association (China Photographic Society).
Gao Fan’s photography achievement is embodied in the field photography. The portraits of the Eastern European characters, shot by him in the New China Period, also demonstrate great artistic attainments and aesthetic purport. In this exhibition, Dingtao Battle, Linfen Battle, March into Beiping, Chairman Mao in Xiyuan Airport and other series of photographic works cover battle forefront scenes, march into the city and leaders’ important activities. Thanks to photography, these records on historical scenes or ritual activities become the carriers of memory, and radiate profundity and inspiration to encourage people and change people’s lifestyle and thought.
Ms. Niu Weiyu (1927- ) is a native of Tanghe County, Henan Province. In the spring of 1945, she joined in revolution. She studied in Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese Military and Political College. In 1947, she served as Publicity Officer of Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Region Political Department. In 1948, she served as a photographer of North China Pictorial. Later, she followed the Second Field Army to advance southwards, and worked as a photographer in Southwest Pictorial. In the early 1951, she was transferred to civilian work and served as a photographer of News Photography Bureau. She was the Head of photography team in North China Branch and Beijing Branch of Xinhua News Agency. In 1955, she began to serve as the central news photojournalist of Xinhua News Agency. In 1973, she was transferred to the post of photographer of foreign affairs team of Xinhua News Agency. In 1978, she began to serve as Head of photography team of Hong Kong Branch of Xinhua News Agency. She retired as a veteran cadre in 1982.
In the New China Period, women-related news photography themes are usually arranged as shooting tasks for female photographers, which are also the sources of female visual images in the New China Period. As one of the few female photographers, Ms. Niu Weiyu shoots widely-disseminated female images such as He Xiangning, Kang Tongbi, Yu Rongling, Zhao Qing, Zhang Quan and Sun Weishi, as well as China’s First Woman’s Day on March 8, 1949, the first batch of women’s pilots of the New China and other topics.
