“When I Left Here - Calligraphy Exhibition Of Zhang Xiliang” co-sponsored by China International Cultural Communication Center, Chinese Calligraphers Association, National Art Museum of China(NAMOC) and Culture Department of Hunan Province opened at National Art Museum of China on December 2,2012.

Born at Tao Huayuan of Changde, Hunan Province in 1943, Zhang Xiliang is now member of Chinese Calligraphers Association, Consultant of Hunan Calligraphers Association, Guest Professor of Arts College of Hunan Normal University, Director of Creation Committee of Hunan Calligraphers Association and CPPCC member of Hunan Province. As a calligrapher from Tao Huayuan, Zhang Xiliang has been upholding a seclusive and indifferent life attitude of Tao Yuanming expressed in his pastoral poetry and working diligently on calligraphy for decades. Borrowing style from Zhao Zhiqian, a master calligrapher of Qing Dynasty and integrating with his own features, Zhang creates his own unique genre. In preface of this exhibition, Zhang Xiliang writes: for next century and next millennium, we will face the most important choice, that is, to choose “soft” or “hard”, to choose light or “heavy” if from perspective of culture. Lao-tzu, a philosopher in the Spring and Autumn Period of ancient China, had made a choice and said: the softest thing in the world dashes against and overcomes the hardest. Lao-tzu selected “soft” and this exhibition shows I also selected “soft”.

Zhang Xiliang shows his artistic style of being invested in pastoral and staying away from secular noisy- “softness”, “indifference” and “loftiness” in his over 70 pieces of works on this exhibition. What’s worth mentioning is that “The Collection of Zhang Xiliang” published by The people's fine arts publishing house will have its initial issue on the day of opening ceremony of the exhibition.
