The 6th Directors'Forum for Asian Art Museums held in Dhaka

The 6th Directors'Forum for Asian Art Museums jointly hosted by National Art Museum of China and National Art Gallery of Bangladesh was held in Dhaka, Capital of Bangladesh, from December 19 to 21. Themed on “Asian Experiences on New Century Art Museums”, directors of Asian Art Museums attending the forum did exchange on development of Asian art museums in recent years, analyzed the new situation and tasks Asian arts and art museums face and reached a consensus on cooperation and exchange among art museums of Asian countries and regions and promotion to development of the DirectorsForum in a positive and practical attitude.

The opening ceremony of the Forum was held in the morning of December 19 and Li Jun, China’s ambassador of Bangladesh, Abul Kalam Azad, Minister of Ministry of Culture of Bangladesh, Fan Dian, Director of China and National Art Museum and Liaquat Ali Lucky, Director of National Art Museum of Bangladesh gave speeches at the ceremony. Nearly 100 directors of different countries and representatives of arts circle of Bangladesh attended the opening ceremony, including Qian Linxiang, Deputy Director, Secretary-General of Professional Committee of NAMOC, Luo Yiping,  Director of Guangdong Museum of Art, Liang Bin, Cultural Counselor of Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh and representatives of Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, National Museum of Western Art and Saitama Art Museum of Japan, National Museum of Contemporary Art and Seoul Museum of Contemporary Art of Korea, National Art Museum of Indonesia, National Art Museum of India, Ministry of Culture of Thailand and National Art Museum of Bangladesh.

“Directors'Forum for Asian Art Museums” is launched by National Art Museum of China under the support of Ministry of Culture of P. R. China. It has been held for 5 times in Beijing, Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul and Nanjing and communications have been done on topics of collections, exhibition, public education, operation and management mode, venue construction and museum cooperation of Asian Art Museums, which enables the Forum the only high-level and regular exchange platform for Asian Art Museums.

From the afternoon of December 19, three sessions of plenary presentation focusing on “Asian Experiences on New Century Art Museums” were made. The delegates all agreed that it had a great significance to promote building and exchange of global art museums through summarizing experiences and fruits of cultural ideas, social influence and management mode of Asian art museums since the new century and displaying development way and characteristics of Asian art museums in context of globalization.

In round-table conference on December 20, the delegates did a discussion on how to consolidate and expand the previous achievements and formulation of “program of action”. The conference made a plan that the Forum would be held in Indonesia, Korea and India in the following 3 years, website for the Forum would be established, exhibition exchange events would be held during closing period of the Forum and Curator Conference of Asian Art Museums of 2013 will be hosted by Guangdong Museum of Art. The Forum will enroll more members to expand its scale.

During the Forum, the delegates visited “The 15th Asian Art Biennial”, which is the largest modern art biennial in South Asia and was held for the 15th times in Bangladesh, a less developed country, and received wide attention and good reputation. In this Asian Art Biennial, organized by NAMOC, works of artists such as Xu Jiang, Xu Bing, Pei Yongmei and Liu Hongwei were selected to display in Chinese Pavilion and attracts great attention. To celebrate the opening of the Forum, National Art Gallery of Bangladesh also held a special art show.
