Introduction to the work:
Chen Jiu (1917-1943) is a contemporary engraver. He went the Shanghai Xinhua Arts Academy to join the Knife Power Woodcut Research Association in 1936, and was elected Executive Director of China National Anti-Japanese Association of Woodcut Circles in Wuhan, 1938. He started working for the anti-Japanese theatre in 1943, but unfortunately, he was killed in a mop-up operation. He was only 27 at that time.
After the July 7th Incident of 1937, the anti-Japanese War broke out at the national level. National Anti-Japanese United Front was formed with CPC and KMT as the main strength. In 1938, KMT army had a live-or-die battle with the Japanese army in Taierzhuang, Shandong, which was a crashing blow for the Japanese. It was a pity that the artist did not create the dynamic atmosphere successfully, which harmed the expressiveness of the work.
