Introduction to the work:
Chen Tiegeng (1908-1969), contemporary engraver, was born in Xingning, Guangdong. He was also known as Chen Xiaotang, or Chen Kebai. He was accepted by State-run West Lake Fine Art Academy in 1928, and founded the Yiba Arts House in Shanghai in 1931, and attended the woodcut study group held by Lu Xun. He was the first young artist to send works to Lu Xun for advice. His work "Capture" and "Mother and Son" were thought highly of by Lu Xun. He went to Yan'an in 1938 to hold the post of Dean of a branch of Lu Xun University of Literature and Arts in Taihang Mountain area. He worked in Lu Xun University of Literature and Arts and Guangdong Fine Arts Academy successively in the 1950s and 1960s.
Similar to his other works, black-white contrast, rough and powerful cutting style was applied in this work. He once said: "I am a prolific writer, and I don't make draft. I cut on the wood directly..."
