Introduction to the work:
Chao Mei was a pioneer for Great Northern Wilderness Engraving Style. He was born in Heze, 1931, and began to learn woodcut when he was in high school in Nanjing, 1945. He joined the PLA in 1949, and was transferred to Heilongjiang with the army. He was transferred to civilian work in 1958, and joined the construction work of Great Northern Wilderness. He went to work as Heilongjiang Branch of China Artist Association in 1962, and held position as Chairman for the Association.

The objects of creation for Great Northern Wilderness Engraving are those transferred army men who went through from army to work in the field. Therefore, the life and work in the farm has some features of army. He formed a style of vibrant cutting skills, magnificent composition, profound concept, and bright color in his artistic experience. "September in the North" was one of his representative works. The composition is wide and profound; a sea of red sorghum is full of a drunkard's poetic enthusiasm. The exaggerated form and color of the red sorghum is also a reflection of the artist's enthusiasm to work in the Great Northern Wilderness Engraving.
