Introduction to the work:
Cai Dizhi, an engraver, was born in Shunde, Guangdong, in 1918. He started practice woodcutting when he was an editor for "Qujiang Pictorial" at the beginning of the anti-Japanese War. Later, he went to Yunnan, and Guangxi to do publicity work for anti-Japanese movement by creating woodcuts.
In September 1944, Japanese invaded Guilin, Guangxi. The KMT Authorities instructed all the citizens there to leave. Suddenly, there was quite a stir in the city, and every one is jittery. Cai Dizhi witnessed people crowded in the streets of Guilin in starvation and every thing was in a mess, and this situation lasted for two months. It turned out to be a shocking tragedy in history. With regard to the tragic atmosphere, the artist intentionally portrayed people's worried looks and the messy situation. He made special effort to create women, children, and old people in the tragic event. The news came that Japan had surrendered, when it was to be published. The artist was happy with tears. This piece of work made great influence because it gave a true picture of the history.
After the victory of the War, Cai joined Renjian Painting Studio in Hong Kong. He successively held posts as vice Chairman of Guangdong Artists Association、deputy Dean of Guangzhou Painting Academy after the 1950s.
