Introduction to the work:
Chen Yiming was born in Wuxi, Zhejiang in 1950. He joined the production and construction corps in Heilongjiang during the Cultural Revolution. He began to work for his Master's Degree in Oil Painting Department of Zhejiang Fine Arts Academy in 1985, and went to Japan for further study after graduation. Liu Yulian, born in Jin County of Zhejiang in 1948, he was accepted by Central Academy of Fine Art as a graduate student, and became a teacher in the academy after graduation, and later went to Japan. He died of illness in 1997. Li bin was born in 1949, and joined the production and construction corps in Heilongjiang in 1968. In 1984, he graduated from the refresher class of Central Academy of Fine Art. He lives abroad at present.

After their cooperation in painting Scar, the three painters made cooperation again in creating Maple. All of them were born around the time of the foundation of the PRC; therefore, they grew up with the new country, went through the Cultural Revolution, and then left the beautiful south to accept the tribulations in the production and construction corps in the northwest. After the crush of the Gang of Four, and the third plenary of the tenth CPC, they took the lead to break through the shackles of the traditional ideas on theories and art, and created Maple, which was awarded the First Prize on the National Fine Arts Exhibition held on the thirties' anniversary of the PRC. The successful of this work mainly lies in the painters' faithful review of the "Cultural Revolution". With realistic spirit and methods of gouache, they portrayed the Red Guards, like Li Honggang, and Lu Danfeng most vividly--Their naiveness, their frankness and sincerity. However, such young people were brought with a tragic ending because of the modern superstition, or personality cult. Maple is the first fine arts work ever made to retrospect over the tragic history of Cultural Revolution.
