International exhibitions of recent years have registered widespread interest in the changing political landscape of eastern Europe and Asia, including the attendant emergence of new art practices from cultures formerly considered peripheral to mainstream contemporary art such as China and Indigenous Australia. Rejecting the familiar visual traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and adopting instead a conceptual lexicon invested with political imperative, the artists in Making Change: Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Australia–China Diplomatic Relations evade the kind of cultural pigeon-holing that can separate Indigenous from non-Indigenous art. Yet the film and photo-based works in the exhibition speak much of the Australian character: they are both cheeky and outspoken, funny and subversive. Much of the work here is uncompromising in its search for truth and deeply evocative of place. Yet what unites the works is an overriding sense of resilience.
