In Memory of the 115 Birthday Anniversary of Han Leran— Han Leran Painting Exhibition

Han Leran, famous revolutionist, artist and international anti-fascist warrior of the Korean nationality, was born in Longjing, Yanji of Jilin in 1898. He studied at Shanghai Art Professional School in his early years, and was determined to link his life with the art and social progress. Thus he started his journey combining revolutionary life with artistic creation. Continuing his study in France in 1929, Han Leran kept drawing from nature in such countries as the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain and Italy, which laid solid painting foundation. When the whole nation was in peril, Han Leran returned to the homeland and devoted himself into publicity undertaking of fighting against Japan and saving the country. He made extraordinary contribution to national liberation unswervingly despite much hardship.
As a revolutionist, Han Leran had a legendary experience. He joined the Communist Party in as early as 1923 as the first party member of the Korean nationality. As an artist, Han Leran boasted profound artistic capability and outstanding artistic achievements. The artist developed a new way in the field of the art and drew passionately cultural heritage and folk custom of the northwestern China after discovery. Since the 1940s, Han Leran travelled over the northwestern region including Xinjiang, Gansu and Qinghai in order to keep visual records of local custom and life. During his journey when he went to Dunhuang and Xinjiang twice, the artist initiated the way of copying the murals, namely, oil paintings and watercolor paintings. He made in-depth study on the two grottos especially making pioneering work in Kizil Grotto. The 1940s witnessed the most intensive and abundant achievements made by the artist, leaving a large number of excellent artworks. Among them, on the one hand, the artworks reflect unique charm of the traditional Chinese art and make the grotto art recognized and spread as a abundant national treasure; on the other hand, the artworks draw folk custom of frontier minorities in the artistic way and develop a new painting theme and an artistic path with local ethnic style. In 1947 when he was prepared to the archaeological and artistic causes with greater efforts to save and promote the national art, Han Leran died at an early age from air crash during the flight from Urumqi to Lanzhou. .
The exhibition showcases a total of 74 pieces of his artworks created from the 1940s and the 1950s including oil paintings, watercolor paintings, and the sketch. In the 1950s, Liu Yuxia, wife of Han Leran, donated 135 masterpieces of his artworks altogether, which became important collection of the National Art Museum of China after many twists and turns after it was founded. On the one hand, the exhibition is intended to commemorate the artist. On the other hand, the show is expected to vigorously promote the art of Han Leran for more intensive publicity and in-depth research. Besides the collection from the National Art Museum of China, the exhibition displays a watercolor painting named Tianchi, Xinjiang, donated to Yanbian Museum by Han Jianli, daughter of Han Leran. Meanwhile, Zou Qikui, famous army painter and painter for standard portrait of Chairman Mao Zedong created the portrait for Han Leran especially for the exhibition. The portrait by Zou Qikui and Lan Lina, famous lacquer painter are regarded as two important exhibits of the exhibition besides the paintings by Han Leran.
