Chang Shuhong(1904-1994), Mai nationality, was a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Later, he entered Paris Institute of Fine Arts to study oil painting, with Lawrence, a master of new classicism in France. He won the spring Saloon prize for many times during his stay in France, and he also organized Chinese Student Art Institute in France in 1936, he returned to China and worked as a professor of State-run Beijing Art School. After the July 7th, the university was transferred to Kunming, Yunnan, where this painting was created. The artist uses the blooming amaryllis (also named as a thunder on a plain) and cactus as the main body to express his desire for peace and his excitement at the victory of the battle. The brick wall and the cup and the doll on the table are full of the flavor of life. The color and the painting skills of the picture is delicate, and the composition decorative, which represents his early artist style.

He went to Dunhuang in 1943 and assumed the office of the president of State-run Dunhuang Arts Research Institute. He made great contribution to the protection of cultural relics in Dunhuang.
