江苏省美术馆的前身是“国立美术陈列馆”，于1936年建成，是20世纪中国第一个现代意义的国家美术馆。新中国成立以后，在此基础上成立江苏省美术陈列馆，1960年更为现名。

    美术馆占地4700平方米，建筑面积7，600平方米。展厅面积2， 400平方米，3层大展厅，每层550平方米，展线160米；四个小展厅，每个170平方米，展线35米，展线高度均为3.3米。江苏省美术馆是造型艺术的博物馆，具有收藏、研究、陈列展览、美术精品及相关资料，向公众进行审美教育，开展国际文化交流等多项职能。

    美术馆收藏以近现代美术作品为主，兼及古今中外，规划以收藏“新金陵画派”代表画家的作品为重中之重。现有各类藏品近万件，其中以中国画最为丰富，包括明代吴门画派、清初四王、金陵八家、扬州八怪、海上画派、新金陵画派以及20世纪诸名家的作品。此外，还收藏大量版画、油画、水彩画、当代书法、民间艺术等美术作品。

    美术馆每年举办90个展览，参观人次10多万次。多年来举办过国内外众多重大展览，如历届全国美展、非洲艺术大展以及黄宾虹、徐悲鸿、刘海粟、傅抱石、李可染、钱松岩、林散之等大师的个人画展。同时经常举办全国名家邀请展和新人提名展、策划学术性展览和藏品陈列，展览活动常年不断。现共有正式职工86人，其中研究人员10人，策展人员3人。

Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum

Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum has a long history. Its predecessor named National Art Exhibition Hall was set up in 1936. It was China s first national art museum in modern sense in the 20th century. After the founding of new China, Jiangsu Provincial Art Exhibition Hall was established on its base. In 1960, its name was changed to the present one.

The museum covers an area of more than 4,700square meters and its floor space area is 7,600 square meters. At present, there are altogether seven exhibition halls in the museum. The total exhibition space is 2,400 square meters. Three large exhibition halls, each of which has an area of 550 square meters and a show wall length of 160 meters, are scattered on the first, second and third stories. Each of the four small exhibition halls has an area of 170 square meters and a show length of 35 meters. The height of all the show walls is 3.3 meters. Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum is a plastic arts museum, with an integration of such functions as collecting, researching and displaying art curiosities and related materials, giving the public an aesthetic education, carrying out international cultural exchange and so on.

Modern works of art occupy the first place in its collections, though these collections range from ancient to modern, from China to foreign countries.The museum will put the focal point of its collection on works produced by representative painters of New Jinling Painting School. At present, it owns more than 9,000 pieces of collections, which belong to different categories. Most of them are traditional Chinese paintings. They include those created by painters of Wumen School of Ming Dynasty, qing chu si wang (four famous painters with same surname Wang in early Qing Dynasty), jin ling ba jia (eight famous painters in Nanjing), yangzhou ba guai (eight unusual painters in Yangzhou), Painting School of Haishang and famous painters in the 20th century. Moreover the museum has collected a lot of woodcut works, Chinese oil paintings, Chinese watercolor paintings, modern calligraphy and folk art works.

The museum holds more than 90 exhibitions each year, including National Art Exhibitions, African Art Exhibition and those solo exhibitions such as Huang Binhong, Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu, Fu Baoshi, Li Keran and so on. The viewers total over 100,000.
