Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Award is the highest prize in the Chinese calligraphy art circles, approved by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Chinese Calligraphers Association. It is rated as one of the 18 national awards for literature and art. It has been held for five sessions since it was inaugurated in 2001. With the approval of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Chinese Calligraphers Association started preparations for the sixth Chinese Calligraphy Lanting Award in 2017. On May 1, Chinese Calligraphers Association released a notice soliciting contributions. It received a total of 3,803 pieces of works from 1,148 artists (3,404 calligraphy and seal cutting works, and 399 theoretical works). From October 29 to November 3, 2017, a review conference was held in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. Experts in the circles reviewed the contributions and selected 70 to give awards and exhibit their works. They include 14 to win awards (seven silver awards, seven bronze awards, and gold award in vacancy) and 56 to have their works exhibited. A total of 171 calligraphy works of 57 selected artists of calligraphy and seal cutting and the theoretical research results of 13 persons who won the Prize for Theoretical Studies, as well as 44 pieces works of judges, commissioners and reviewers, were exhibited at the exhibition.
