Introduction to the work:
Chang Yu (1900-1966), with an original name Chang Youshu, was born in Shunqing of Sichuan. He began to learn calligraphy when he was 9 years old. He went to Japan to study painting in early years and went to Paris to study on a work-study basis in Paris Advanced Art School in 1921 and resided in France. He died from gas poisoning in his apartment in Paris in 1966. He is good at oil painting, watercolor painting, and his style was influenced by expressionism and Fauvism. His works are concise, bright, and most of them are in light color with a little area of blackness in the center, which is quite eye-catching. He had gained his fame in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s with his unique style. However, he missed many opportunities because of his waywardness, and sensitivity, and lived down-and-out all his life. Unfortunately, he died when his works were about to be exhibited in Taiwan. Therefore, those works were kept by Taiwan Historical Museum.
