Introduction to the work:
Chen Yanning was born in 1945 in Guangzhou of Guangdong Province, and he graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1965. Later, she went to work for the Office and Studio of Guangdong Literature and Arts. He began to work for Guangzhou Painting Academy since 1978. He went to America for further study in 1986. After graduation from the Art Department of Oklahoma University in 1988, he stayed to teach. The picture was named "Doctor Afang" originally, and was changed to New Doctor of the Fishing Port before its exhibition on the National Fine Art exhibition in 1974. He portrayed a strong barefoot woman doctor who sends healthy tea to fisherman who just came back, and sang praise for the spirit of serving the people. The so-called barefoot doctors were those nurses in rural areas who serve fishermen with necessary medicine without quitting their own jobs. They are very popular during the Cultural Revolution. New Doctor of the Fishing Port is a representative work of that time. Changing "Afang" to "New Doctor" was a common practice at that time. The artist created a woman nurse with realistic techniques. Her strong hand and bare feet show the vitality of fishery women. Her innocent face is also a typical feature of fishing girls who are out going, warm hearted, and kind. The colorful outline avoided conceptual composition, strengthened local features, and the beauty loving nature of women. It was exhibited in the France Spring Saloon in 1982.
