Inspired by the different forms and views of the Bodhisattva from various eras, Ye explores this spiritual icon and her role in the historical, cultural and aesthetical context. Through the Bodhisattva, he expresses the sentiments of the Chinese people, advocating the key values of forgivingness, compassion and harmony that are associated with her. A silent history has been rekindled, its captivating ambiguity brought to light as Ye elucidates a comprehensive image of China, allowing viewers to experience the country’s unique appeal - one which is innately traditional, but also modern in various aspects.

Each painting fuses an artistic interpretation of real life with the artist’s visualization of the spiritual world. Unveiled here is the artist’s exploration of an inner world, for he too searches for a personal, sacred abode, which – thanks to his unique artistry – glows with numinosity. The Exploring the Bodhisattva series represents a significant milestone in Ye’s artistic journey, as his views on the advancement of Chinese contemporary art gains clarity. For the artist, it is an enriching process, as a balance is achieved between the past and the present, and a new gate is being thrown open for a flow of communication between the portals of the traditional East and modernized West. An exchange of ideas ensues, while each portal succeeds in adhering to its own individuality. For the East, the sense of distinctiveness is upheld through none other than the everlasting image and presence of the Bodhisattva Guan Yin.
